If I Look Back, I Am Lost

I started walking at dawn
Thought it was a bright new morn
Only to fathom later on
That too high is love’s cost
Knowing just that if I look back
I am lost

It was noon before I was aware
That the sun was scorching my heart
Of thirst and hunger not spared
I trudged on without thought
If I look back
I am lost

Evening came and
With it came empty breeze
To greet my empty soul
Yet I make this journey
Without a destination
Because if I look back
I am lost

Dusk brought darkness and fear
Chilled to the core
I stumbled through the night
Awaiting a hopeless dawn
Unable to quit because
If I look back
I am lost
